India’s vibrant culture, tradition and heritage often attracts people from all over the world. Cities in India like Agra, Jaipur, Goa, Kashmir, Kerala, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mysore, Darjeeling, etc., are some of the popular tourist destinations in India.

India is a tropical country with diverse climate features and there are chances of foreign tourists being exposed to a variety of germs, bacteria and viruses. If you are planning to visit India, you need to take certain precautions, especially in terms of food, to stay healthy and safe.

Following are some tips that help you stay healthy and avoid falling sick while travelling in India.

Food – What to eat and what to avoid

Avoid eating street food: Many cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad are famous for street food. The Chandni Chowk area in Delhi is popularly called as ‘Street Food Capital of Delhi’. You will find a variety of snack items like Pani Puri, Pav Bhaji, Bhel Puri, Samosa, etc., in these areas. They look colourful and are tempting. Try them if the premises are clean and hygienic. But in most cases it’s better to avoid because we can’t guarantee the quality and hygiene. There are chances of the food being contaminated.

Avoid eating spicy food: India is the country of spices and the people here like to add spices in many of their dishes that make them hot and spicy. Especially some Indian cuisines like Hyderabadi cuisine that includes Biryani, Tandoori Chicken, Keema, Masala Tea, etc., Goan cuisine from Goa includes Murgh Malvani, Phanasachi Bhaji; Gujarati cuisine, Kerala cuisine are popular for their spicy dishes. People who are not used to them cannot handle them.

So, whenever you are ordering food at a restaurant or at a food stall ask the server to make the dish less spicy or else go for less spicy food like Fried rice, Idli, sweet dishes, Dokla, Daal Bhati, etc.

Avoid eating raw vegetables and fruits: Some restaurants and food stalls in India use tap water (supplied by local government) to wash vegetables and fruits (sometimes they may not wash). This water is more likely to get contaminated during its transit through various pipelines. Moreover, we are not sure whether the knives they use are sterile or not. So, it’s better to avoid raw fruits or vegetables that will be served as salads with most Indian dishes.

Eat freshly cooked food served steaming hot: In many countries, people are used to cold meals, but it is better to prefer steaming hot food in India, especially when you are having dishes that are boiled in water or steamed like Rice, Idli, Upma, etc. Make sure you ask the server to serve it fresh and hot. When the food is fresh and hot, it is less likely to carry food borne pathogens.

Avoid buffets: In many restaurants in India, morning’s unsold food will be served in the dinner buffets. Unless you have a good review for hygiene of a restaurant from travel guide like ‘Lonely Planet’, don’t take the risk. Stick to what is recommended because you will be sure on the hygienic conditions of the restaurants.

Avoid cold dairy products: In India, many restaurants prepare dishes with dairy products like yogurt, paneer, cheese, milk, etc. Yogurt is served as a side dish for many of the dishes like Indian Thali, Biryani, etc. As cold dairy products are prone to contamination, better to avoid them.

Eat at international food chains: The best thing to avoid all this is to eat at international food chains like KFC, McDonald’s, Subway, Domino’s Pizza, etc., that are available across India. Make sure you buy dishes that are customized to India like Rice Bowlz, Aloo Tikki Burger – after all, you are in India you need to try Indian dishes.

Beverages – What to drink and what to avoid

When travelling in India, you need to be very careful while choosing unpacked beverages, as they may be contaminated. Take a look at some of the beverages to avoid.

Avoid drinking tap water: As discussed earlier, water is supplied by local government and it may not be safe to consume.

Drink only bottled water: Go for reputed brands like Bisleri, Kinley, Aquafina, Himalayan or Bailey’s, and check if the cap is sealed.

Avoid ice cubes: While ordering cold beverages like cool drinks, fruit juices, sugarcane juice, etc., ask them to serve without adding ice cubes. Many restaurants use tap water to prepare ice cubes.

Avoid drinking at road-side juice stalls: Avoid drinking lassi (spiced and sweetened butter milk), fruit juices, sugarcane juice, cold yogurt, etc., on the street. Don’t get tempted by seeing the crowd at the stall. Better to go for branded and packaged juices or to the stalls that are hygienic.

Coconut water: India is a land of coconuts. In cities like Kerala, Cochin, Goa, Hyderabad, etc., coconuts are available throughout the year. Though the coconut water is good for rehydrating the body, the sickle may not be sterile. So, better to avoid the water unless you see the sickle is clean.

Tips To Avoid Food Poisoning While Travelling In Nepal

This, unfortunately, is in no way going to guarantee that you dont get sick if you follow my suggestions step by step, but it may stop you from getting a bad case of Dysentery or even a mild but embarrassing case of Diarrhoea. I myself have been caught out in Nepal a few times before following the steps below, and it wasnt local food that got me the first and the worst time, it was my passion for chocolate croissants that had me in bed for two days, and very ill for the following week or so. Light cases have come at me when eating dried Buffalo meat, salted and hung in the open doors, and unfortunately, its just as easy to develop an upset tummy just from feasting off plates that have been washed in untreated water. Here are a few tips to make the dreaded bug a little less potent and certainly helps me out when travelling.

Water Worries: Its very simple, just dont drink the stuff out of the tap at all if you have a weak stomach or youre just worried. Use treated or boiled water to brush your teeth, and try not to get too much in your mouth when taking a shower. It may sound over excessive but the best precaution is over doing it.
Trekkers Miracle: When asking many seasoned trekkers how they stay healthy while trekking through the Himalaya and dining at local teahouses etc. They often say that having a bottle of coke with all meals is a good way to kill off any bacteria that may be slipping past the radar and into your stomach.

Hand Sanitisers: Fabulous invention, the hand sanitiser that does not require water, is a great way to make sure those germs you have picked up, from perhaps patting a cute puppy on the road to touching untreated water. Remember in Nepal most dogs will be carrying some form of parasite or another. In most cases food poisoning does occur from simply eating with dirty hands.

Ice and Cold Food: Although these days most tourist restaurants will use treated water for their ice, its probably better to just avoid ice all together, even in your alcoholic beverage. If you want to drink, then drink bottled beer, or coke and your spirit of choice, no ice. Cold food on the street is pretty much a big no no, if its not piping hot or cooking on the spot then dont put it in your mouth! Also make sure your salad has been washed in treated water if youre going to eat it.

Peel able Fruit: Another wise choice for untreated water washed fruit, if you can peel it, then you can be more sure you are peeling the possible bacteria off, things like bananas, dragon fruit, oranges and lychees, try to avoid apples unless you wash them yourself with treated water or peel the skin.
Treatment when its too late: Most people take something like Imodium with them. In actual fact, this can block up the bacteria along with your embarrassing problem and drag it out longer. Go and see your doctor and ask whats best for you, most Doctors will give you an actual antibiotic that will get in and solve the problem not trap it. But remember your Doctor is the best person to decide whats best for you and the above information in merely a guide to possible avoidance to these unwanted travel nasties. Also, drink a lot of treated water and hot water, keep hydrated and wash it out at the same time.

Last but not least, if youre not sure about where to eat, or what to eat, by no means should you avoid eating great local food, after all its all part of the travel experience. A good travel company that is actually based in the country is a great way to go, as they should be able to suggest fabulous and clean local eateries and restaurants. Another good way to tell is if the restaurant is full of locals, it generally means the food is delicious.

How Not To Miss Your Flight

Sometimes the most stressful part of going on holiday, or travelling far away for business is getting to the airport on time, and with good reason, because as we all know, missing a flight can mean having to pay for tickets for another flight, with long delays in between. But if you want to avoid this stress, here are some tried and tested ways to ensure that you wont miss your flight and ruin the start of your holiday.

Be Prepared

This isnt just a motto for the Scouts, but also one for everything that life throws at you, including going on holiday. So as the saying goes, be prepared, mark the dates of your holiday in your diary, a calendar, or even your mobile phone, so you dont forget. Inform your work of your chosen holiday dates so that you wont get caught up in any least minute work problems and time how long it will take you to get to the airport, because every second counts when youre on holiday.

Get Up Early

Set an alarm or two, so that you can get up early and make sure everything is ready for your trip. Ensure that you wake up your family and travelling companions so that they have plenty of time to get ready, and pack snacks and entertainment, such as an MP3 player, books or a portable DVD player.

If you got to travel far to the airport, make sure you leave in plenty of time, if you need to take a taxi, book it in advance and let them know what time your flight is, so that it arrives promptly. Keep listening to the radio for the road traffic updates, so that you know which roads should be avoided if youre driving yourself to the airport. Traveling Out Of Body

I can see the cops coming! They’re a good thousand feet away. I can clearly make out their uniforms and swinging nightsticks. How can I be seeing this?

I didn’t dare mention it to my fellow underage drinking mates lounging with me on the grassy knoll in the park. Am I making this up? Projecting it somehow into my vision? Forcefully, I shook my head back and forth in an effort to free my mind of its strange perception.

But the view of the two police officers remained in my sight, as they sauntered closer and closer to our drinking den. In fact, to my further astonishment, I saw a much wider perspective as I swiveled my gaze within the picture before me. I can see myself!

Frantically blinking my eyes open and shut trying to erase this impossibility, I still found myself staring at my own physical body on the ground next to my beer buddies. The place from which I was viewing was about forty feet in the air! As I shifted my attention to look at the looker, I saw an airborne body in the form of a luminous shimmer, much like a ghost is portrayed in a movie. Then, with the ease of a mere thought, I discovered I could shift my point of view from my physical body on the ground back to my ethereal light body in the air. Using my eyes in my subtle body, I surveyed the scene again from my perch in the air.

Am I making all this up? Do I want to impress my pals so much, I’m concocting an extrasensory perception to allow me to warn them of an oncoming bust? My frenetic self-questioning came to an abrupt halt as I heard one of the officers whisper to his colleague, “Do you hear that noise? There are some kids in the park.”

Whether I was conjuring my supernormal sight and hearing to court favor with my friends or not, I needed to act-and quickly. “Hey, guys, don’t ask me how I know, but there are some cops right up the street and they’re on to us. Let’s split.” My three inebriated friends and I quietly sneaked down the hill and out of the park under the helpful cloak of darkness. By a nanosecond, we successfully evaded detection as we heard the policemen slashing at the bushes with their billyclubs right behind us. A close call!

“Hey, how’d ya know the fuzz was there?” my buddy pressed me as we arrived safely back at our car.

“Uh, I just knew somehow. A guess, I guess,” I muttered, covering for myself as best I could under the circumstances.

“Well, a pretty good one, man. We’d be up the creek if they caught us. Thanks. You’re all right. We should have you around every time we go drinking.”

Ah, music to my ears. And so my young career as a drinking guard began!

My friends, at sixteen, were older than I but still under the legal drinking age of eighteen in New York State. I was fifteen and considered myself really lucky to be included in this older gang at a time of life when acceptance and belonging was paramount. And to have access to liquor through their connections was heaven for me.

I would do almost anything to please these guys and stay tight with them. I mused to myself, My newfound super-vision is coming in real handy. If we got busted for underage drinking, we’d all get grounded by our parents, not to mention getting in trouble with the law. I’ve got to keep this good thing going!

On that fateful night, my need for approval prompted me to keep expanding this burgeoning, new skill that I stumbled across in the line of necessity and opportunity.

As I played with my prowess as a night watchman for the gang, I realized I was doing more than clairvoyance, “clear seeing.” Each time I playfully sent myself out to scan the scene for police, I was having a bona fide out-of-body experience. I didn’t have a name for it then, but I sure knew I was doing it! I was right on the mark every time I called a cop alert. My skill was valued by the friends I valued. Literally, I was flying high!

Since my teenage discovery, I’ve continued to explore out-of-body adventures. And I always laugh in admiration when I look back on how God tricked me into developing my first natural spiritual ability.
